A second opinion means that another doctor reviews your medical situation and gives an independent assessment. This can help you feel more confident about your diagnosis or treatment. On this page, you can find information about how to request an appointment, what documents you need to provide, and how payment or reimbursement works.

Requesting a second opinion

You do not need formal permission to request a second opinion, but it is recommended to discuss it with your current doctor or general practitioner.

Required information

Please include the following personal information:

• Full name
• Date of birth
• Home address
• Telephone number and email address
• European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), if available

Please also include the following medical information:

• Preferably a referral letter from your general practitioner or specialist requesting a second opinion
• Summary of your medical history and diagnosis
• Relevant radiology (imaging) and laboratory reports
• Pathology report (if available)

Health insurance, costs, and reimbursement

For EU-insured patients

If you live in a country within the European Union and have health insurance there, reimbursement is often possible. It is advisable to contact your health insurance provider before requesting a second opinion. They can inform you about their procedures and requirements. In many cases, an S2/E112 form is needed for reimbursement. For more information, visit:

If your insurance does not cover the second opinion, you will need to pay the costs yourself. You can find an overview of current rates here:

• 029799077 – Outpatient visit, consultation, and feedback
• 029799075 – Outpatient visit, consultation, feedback, and additional diagnostics (for example, an MRI scan)

For patients without EU health insurance

If you do not have EU health insurance, it is recommended to check with any applicable insurer whether part of the costs can be reimbursed. If this is not the case, you will need to pay the full amount yourself. Sometimes a warranty statement is required before your appointment.
